The summer is here and everyone is rushing to get their air conditioners repaired. An alternative that one can use to air conditioners can be evaporative coolers. Most people usually get these two mixed up but there is a significant difference between them and also how they function. Air coolers are portable units that work in a different way as compared to air conditioners in cooling air. Although there are a few disadvantages of using evaporative coolers as compared to air conditioners, the advantages that they offer far outweigh the disadvantages.

Firstly, let us learn how evaporative coolers work. These portable coolers work using an endothermic reaction which in simple terms means that the cooler absorbs the heat from the air. As the cooler takes in hot dry air and passes it through water that is stored in the wick, the water absorbs the heat from the air causing it to evaporate. As the heat is transferred to the water, the air is cooled down. These units, however, are most efficient in areas that have low humidity levels; which basically mean that there is very little moisture in the air. If there is a lot of moisture (high humidity) in the air, they would not be as efficient as they basically work on the principal of removing moisture from the air. You can think of a cooler as a type of fan. The difference being that it lets out cool air as it is not able to cool an entire room but an object or person. This is a key difference between air conditioners and evaporative coolers.

Its design and the way it works mean that evaporative coolers are cheaper as compared to air conditioners. They also do not consume as much electricity as the latter. You can take a cooler as an upgrade from a regular fan since it offers cool air.

Coolers can be placed anywhere that has a power source and they can start functioning immediately. As for the case of air conditioners, you have to make sure that you have a permanent outlet outside your house for them to expel the hot air out. Coolers just require a window or door to be opened to move the hot air out and let the cool air replace it. Another added benefit that they offer is that since they are placed inside and keep the air cool through an endothermic reaction, they are able to remove dust particles from the air in your room. As the air goes through the system of the cooler, not only does it gets cooled but also the dust and other particles are removed from it providing your room with cleaner air.

Air coolers can be a cheaper solution for you this summer. Running it does not require much energy thus being more economical. Repairs for them are also not costly unlike air conditioners which require expensive maintenance. Now you can spend this summer chilling at the beach without having to worry about the electricity bills!
